Tuscany is a land of natural thermal springs, and some of the most beautiful are just a short drive from Monteverdi Marittimo. From historic thermal pools to peaceful baths hidden in the forest, they are perfect places to slow down, relax and enjoy Tuscany in every season.

🇬🇧 Venturina Terme is a historic thermal town on the Etruscan Coast, surrounded by the countryside of the Val di Cornia and only a comfortable drive from Monteverdi Marittimo. The area has been known for its naturally warm thermal waters since ancient times and is an excellent destination for a relaxing half-day or full-day trip.

The thermal water emerges naturally at around 36°C, and Venturina offers two different ways to enjoy it – the atmospheric Calidario Terme Etrusche and the more traditional Terme di Venturina.

Calidario is much more than a conventional swimming pool or spa. The resort has developed around a historic natural thermal spring – a millenary lake covering more than 3,000 m² – and its wellness concept is strongly inspired by the ancient Etruscan bathing tradition. 

There are essentially two different experiences:

🌿 Sorgente Naturale
The large outdoor natural thermal lake is the heart of Calidario. The spring water flows naturally at approximately 36°C, although the average temperature of the lake varies depending on weather conditions. Around it are areas for relaxing and spending several peaceful hours in the thermal water. 

✨ Thermarium – Ancient Etruscan Wellness
For a more complete wellness experience, choose the Thermarium. It includes access to the Natural Spring together with sauna, steam bath, hydromassage pool, aromatic and sensory showers, chromotherapy, relaxation area and herbal tea corner. Massages and other wellness treatments can also be booked. 

There is also a refreshment area offering light food and drinks, as well as the Aqvolina Restaurant & Lounge Bar, so it is easy to spend several hours or even most of the day here.

We definitely recommend Calidario. The combination of warm natural water, the historic atmosphere and the wellness area makes it one of the most enjoyable thermal experiences near Monteverdi.

Especially outside the main summer season, we expect Calidario to become one of the places we will visit regularly ourselves. 😊

For visitors looking for a more traditional thermal-bath experience, Venturina also offers Terme di Venturina, with indoor and outdoor thermal pools and spa facilities.

This is a good alternative if your priority is simply to enjoy the thermal water and swimming, while Calidario would be our first choice for the overall atmosphere and wellness experience.

Calidario è molto più di una normale piscina o centro benessere. Il resort si è sviluppato intorno a una storica sorgente termale naturale – un lago millenario di oltre 3.000 m² – e il suo concetto di benessere si ispira fortemente all'antica tradizione termale etrusca. 

È possibile scegliere principalmente tra due esperienze:

È inoltre possibile prenotare massaggi e altri trattamenti benessere. 

È disponibile anche un'area ristoro con proposte leggere e bevande, oltre all'Aqvolina Restaurant & Lounge Bar, rendendo possibile trascorrere qui diverse ore o buona parte della giornata.

Consigliamo sicuramente Calidario. La combinazione tra acqua termale naturale, atmosfera storica e area wellness lo rende una delle esperienze termali più piacevoli nei dintorni di Monteverdi.

Soprattutto fuori dall'alta stagione, pensiamo che Calidario diventerà uno dei luoghi che frequenteremo regolarmente anche noi. 😊

♨️ Terme di Venturina

Per chi cerca invece un'esperienza termale più tradizionale, a Venturina si trovano anche le Terme di Venturina, con piscine termali interne ed esterne e servizi benessere.

È una buona alternativa soprattutto per chi desidera semplicemente godersi l'acqua termale e nuotare, mentre per atmosfera ed esperienza complessiva la nostra prima scelta rimane Calidario.

♨️ Terme di Sassetta – La Cerreta

🇬🇧 Hidden deep in the forests near the beautiful hilltop village of Sassetta, La Cerreta Terme offers one of the most peaceful and authentic thermal experiences in this part of Tuscany.

The thermal baths are part of a 75-hectare biodynamic farm, surrounded by chestnut and oak forests. The atmosphere is completely different from a conventional spa – here, nature, silence and warm thermal water are the main attraction.

📍 Sassetta (LI) – Costa degli Etruschi
🚗 Approx. 30–35 minutes from Residence Girasole

The thermal water rises naturally from an underground source at approximately 51°C and is rich in sulphates, calcium, minerals and trace elements. The architecture of the thermal pools is inspired by ancient Etruscan and Roman bathing traditions.

The heart of La Cerreta is formed by three thermal pools with different temperatures:

💧 Indoor Calidarium – 38°C
The warmest indoor thermal pool, ideal for deep relaxation.

🌿 Outdoor Tepidarium – 36°C
A beautiful outdoor thermal pool surrounded by nature, with hydromassage and waterfalls.

🌳 Outdoor Frigidarium – 34°C
The second outdoor pool is slightly cooler, but still pleasantly warm and completely immersed in the surrounding forest.

The thermal experience also includes a river-stone steam room, aromatherapy bio-sauna, sensory showers with chromotherapy and aromatherapy, Kneipp path and relaxation areas.

Massages and wellness treatments are also available, and La Cerreta has its own restaurant connected to the biodynamic farm. Advance reservation for the thermal baths is recommended and may be required depending on the chosen experience.

❤️ Our recommendation – make the journey part of the experience

We definitely recommend Terme di Sassetta, not only for the thermal baths themselves but also for the journey.

Our favourite route from Monteverdi is to drive towards Sassetta and then continue after your visit in the direction of Venturina Terme.

The road takes you through beautiful Tuscan countryside, forests and hills, making the journey itself part of the experience. You can easily combine the thermal baths with Sassetta, Suvereto or Venturina Terme and turn the trip into a wonderful half-day or full-day excursion.

For us, this is exactly the kind of place that makes Monteverdi special – nature, silence, warm thermal water and Tuscany all around you. ❤️

🚗 Don't be afraid of the last part of the road!

One useful thing to know before your first visit: La Cerreta really is hidden in the forest.

The final approach includes approximately 700 metres of unpaved country road – the typical Italian “strada bianca”. Don't worry when the asphalt suddenly ends – you are going the right way. 😊

There are two parking areas in the forest. The first is for the restaurant, while the second, slightly higher up, serves the Agriturismo and Thermal Baths. From the thermal-bath parking area, it is only about 100 metres on foot to the entrance.

Our tip: follow the official signs for La Cerreta – Terme di Sassetta rather than alternative shortcuts suggested by your navigation system. Some of the surrounding farm roads are not easily passable.

Terme di Sassetta – La Cerreta

🇮🇹 Nascoste nei boschi vicino allo splendido borgo di Sassetta, le Terme di Sassetta – La Cerreta offrono una delle esperienze termali più tranquille e autentiche di questa parte della Toscana.

Le terme fanno parte di un'azienda agricola biodinamica di 75 ettari, circondata da boschi di castagni e querce. L'atmosfera è completamente diversa da quella di un centro benessere tradizionale: qui i protagonisti sono la natura, il silenzio e l'acqua termale.

L'acqua termale sgorga naturalmente da un bacino sotterraneo a circa 51°C ed è ricca di solfati, calcio, minerali e oligoelementi. L'architettura delle vasche si ispira alle antiche tradizioni termali etrusche e romane.

🌿 Tre piscine termali immerse nel bosco

Il cuore di La Cerreta è costituito da tre piscine termali con temperature diverse:

💧 Calidarium interno – 38°C
La piscina termale interna più calda, ideale per un relax profondo.

🌿 Tepidarium esterno – 36°C
Una splendida piscina termale all'aperto immersa nella natura, con idromassaggi e cascate.

🌳 Frigidarium esterno – 34°C
La seconda piscina esterna è leggermente più fresca, ma ancora piacevolmente calda e completamente immersa nel bosco.

Il percorso termale comprende inoltre bagno turco in pietra di fiume, bio-sauna con aromaterapia, docce emozionali con cromoterapia e aromaterapia, percorso Kneipp e zone relax.

Sono disponibili anche massaggi e trattamenti benessere e La Cerreta dispone di un proprio ristorante legato all'azienda agricola biodinamica. È consigliabile prenotare in anticipo l'accesso alle terme.

❤️ Il nostro consiglio – anche il viaggio fa parte dell'esperienza

Consigliamo sicuramente Terme di Sassetta, non soltanto per le terme stesse, ma anche per il viaggio.

Il nostro itinerario preferito da Monteverdi è quello che porta verso Sassetta e, dopo la visita alle terme, prosegue in direzione di Venturina Terme.

La strada attraversa splendidi paesaggi della campagna toscana, boschi e colline e rende il viaggio stesso parte dell'esperienza. È possibile combinare facilmente le terme con una visita a Sassetta, Suvereto o Venturina Terme, trasformando il viaggio in una bellissima escursione di mezza giornata o di una giornata intera.

Per noi è proprio questo tipo di luogo a rendere speciale Monteverdi – natura, silenzio, acqua termale calda e la Toscana tutto intorno. ❤️

🚗 Non preoccupatevi dell'ultimo tratto di strada!

Una cosa utile da sapere prima della prima visita: La Cerreta è davvero nascosta nel bosco.

Gli ultimi circa 700 metri si percorrono su una strada sterrata – la tipica “strada bianca” italiana. Non preoccupatevi quando finisce l'asfalto: siete sulla strada giusta. 😊

Nel bosco troverete due parcheggi. Il primo è dedicato al ristorante, mentre il secondo, poco più in alto, serve l'Agriturismo e le Terme. Dal parcheggio delle terme restano soltanto circa 100 metri a piedi fino all'ingresso.

Il nostro consiglio: seguite le indicazioni ufficiali per La Cerreta – Terme di Sassetta e non eventuali scorciatoie proposte dal navigatore. Alcune strade poderali della zona non sono facilmente percorribili.

SATURNIA – CASCATE DEL MULINO & TERME DI SATURNIA

≈ 2–2.5 hours from Monteverdi Marittimo · Maremma

Saturnia is farther away than our other thermal bath recommendations, but we absolutely recommend making the trip. Especially if you are staying in Monteverdi for several days and the weather is not ideal for the beach, Saturnia can become a wonderful full-day excursion into southern Tuscany.

The thermal water of Saturnia emerges at approximately 37°C and flows through a series of extraordinary natural travertine pools at the famous Cascate del Mulino. The waterfalls are completely free of charge and accessible 24 hours a day. 

There is one thing to keep in mind: Saturnia is famous, and Cascate del Mulino can become extremely crowded, particularly during weekends and the high season. Coming early in the morning or outside the busiest months can completely change the experience.

🚗 Parking tip from our experience: There is a parking area close to the Cascate del Mulino. Parking arrangements can change, so check the signs and payment instructions when you arrive. We have experienced problems with the local payment terminal, and EasyPark was not available for us there — so having another means of payment is useful. The municipality reopened the dedicated parking area for the 2026 season in March. 

🌿 TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES

A short drive away is the completely different Terme di Saturnia Natural Destination.

Unlike the wild and free Cascate del Mulino, this is a paid thermal park and resort. Day visitors can use outdoor thermal pools, whirlpools, vascular paths, sauna, changing rooms and relaxation facilities. There is also a bar and bistro, and parking is included free of charge with admission. 

The grounds are beautiful, spacious and offer considerably more privacy and comfort than the public waterfalls.

❤️ OUR TIP

Visit both.

Start with the iconic Cascate del Mulino and experience the extraordinary natural pools. Then spend part of the day at the thermal park, where everything is calmer and more comfortable.

They use the same extraordinary thermal water, but the experiences could hardly be more different. In fact, the water first emerges at the resort and subsequently flows for about 2 km through the countryside before reaching Cascate del Mulino. 

We recommend both – together they make Saturnia worth the longer journey from Monteverdi.

SATURNIA – CASCATE DEL MULINO & TERME DI SATURNIA

≈ 2–2,5 ore da Monteverdi Marittimo · Maremma

Saturnia è più lontana rispetto alle altre terme che consigliamo, ma secondo noi vale assolutamente il viaggio. Se trascorrete qualche giorno a Monteverdi e il tempo non è ideale per il mare, può diventare una splendida escursione di un'intera giornata nella Toscana meridionale.

L'acqua termale di Saturnia sgorga a circa 37°C e forma le straordinarie piscine naturali di travertino delle famose Cascate del Mulino. L'accesso alle cascate è gratuito e possibile 24 ore su 24. 

Attenzione però: Saturnia è molto famosa e le Cascate del Mulino possono essere davvero affollate, soprattutto nei fine settimana e durante l'alta stagione. Arrivare presto al mattino o visitarle fuori stagione può regalare un'esperienza completamente diversa.

🚗 Il nostro consiglio per il parcheggio: nelle vicinanze delle Cascate del Mulino è disponibile un'area di parcheggio. Le modalità possono cambiare, quindi controllate sempre la segnaletica sul posto. Durante una nostra visita il terminale di pagamento ha dato qualche problema e EasyPark non era disponibile: meglio avere con sé un'alternativa per il pagamento.

🌿 DUE ESPERIENZE COMPLETAMENTE DIVERSE

A breve distanza si trova il Terme di Saturnia Natural Destination, un'esperienza completamente diversa.

Qui l'ingresso è a pagamento e permette di usufruire del parco termale con piscine all'aperto, idromassaggi, percorsi vascolari, sauna e zone relax. Sono disponibili anche bar e bistrot e il parcheggio è gratuito con l'ingresso. 

❤️ IL NOSTRO CONSIGLIO

Visitate entrambi.

Prima le Cascate del Mulino, selvagge, naturali e iconiche. Poi concedetevi qualche ora nel parco termale, molto più tranquillo, confortevole e riservato.

La cosa affascinante è che si tratta della stessa acqua termale: sgorga presso il resort e percorre circa 2 km attraverso la campagna prima di raggiungere le Cascate del Mulino. 

Consigliamo entrambe le esperienze: insieme rendono Saturnia una meta che vale il viaggio da Monteverdi.
