Driving is one of the best ways to discover Tuscany – from historic hilltop villages and vineyards to beaches, thermal baths and places that are difficult to reach by public transport.
Driving in Italy is generally easy, but there are a few important rules and local specifics that visitors should know. ZTL restricted zones, parking colours, speed cameras, motorway tolls and fuel stations can work differently from what you may be used to at home.
This guide explains the most important things you should know before setting off.
🌻 Girasole Tip: Take your time. Tuscany is not only about the destination – some of its most beautiful experiences are found along the way.
Many historic Italian cities and towns have ZTL zones (Zona a Traffico Limitato) – areas where vehicle access is restricted or permitted only at certain times.
Entrances are usually marked by a red-bordered circular sign and are often monitored automatically by cameras that record vehicle licence plates.
⚠️ Do not enter an active ZTL unless you are authorised. Navigation systems may sometimes suggest a route through a restricted area, so always follow the road signs rather than the navigation.
ZTL zones are common in historic centres such as Florence, Pisa, Siena, Rome and many smaller Tuscan towns.
🏨 What if your hotel is inside a ZTL?
If your hotel or accommodation is located inside a ZTL, contact them before entering. Hotels may have procedures for authorised guests and, where permitted, can arrange or register vehicle access.
Never assume that a hotel reservation automatically allows you to enter the ZTL.
🌻 Girasole Tip
When visiting historic towns, the easiest solution is usually to park outside the historic centre and continue on foot. Tuscany's old towns are generally compact and walking is often the best way to explore them.
Parking spaces in Italy are usually identified by coloured road markings:
🔵 Blue lines – paid parking. Check the nearby sign for operating hours and prices.
⚪ White lines – usually free parking, although time limits or other restrictions may apply.
🟡 Yellow lines – reserved parking, for example for residents, disabled drivers, taxis or other authorised vehicles.
Always check the road signs next to the parking area, as local rules may differ.
In many Italian towns and cities, paid parking can also be managed through the EasyPark app.
The app allows you to start, extend or stop your parking session directly from your phone, without returning to the parking meter.
🌻 Girasole Tip: EasyPark is useful when exploring Tuscany because you can extend your parking remotely if lunch or sightseeing takes a little longer than expected.
🔵 Strisce blu – parcheggio a pagamento. Controllate cartelli, orari e tariffe.
🇬🇧 English
The general speed limits in Italy for passenger cars are:
🏘️ Urban areas: 50 km/h
🛣️ Outside urban areas: 90 km/h
🚙 Main extra-urban roads: 110 km/h
🛣️ Motorways (Autostrada): 130 km/h
Always follow the posted signs, as limits can be lower depending on the road, weather conditions or local regulations.
📷 Autovelox & Tutor
Speed controls are common throughout Italy.
Autovelox measures your speed at a specific point, while the Tutor system used mainly on motorways measures your average speed between two points.
Do not rely only on navigation apps for camera locations – always follow the posted speed limit.
🌻 Girasole Tip: On Tuscan country roads, the legal limit may sometimes be higher than the speed that is actually comfortable or safe. Roads around Monteverdi can be narrow, winding and occasionally crossed by wildlife, especially in the evening and at night.
Most Italian motorways (Autostrade) are toll roads. On traditional sections, you normally collect a ticket when entering the motorway and pay according to the distance travelled when leaving.
At the exit, choose the correct lane according to your payment method:
💳 Cards – lanes marked for card payment
💶 Cash – cash/payment lanes
🟡 Telepass – electronic toll lanes for compatible devices
⚠️ Do not enter a Telepass-only lane unless you have a compatible electronic toll device. Official motorway signage distinguishes these lanes by their yellow Telepass markings.
🎫 What if the motorway ticket doesn't work?
Occasionally, a ticket may be damaged or the exit machine may be unable to read it. Don't panic and don't reverse out of the lane.
Use the assistance/intercom button at the toll booth and explain where you entered the motorway. If the entry cannot be established, the system can initially calculate the toll from the furthest possible entry point; Autostrade per l'Italia also provides a procedure to declare the actual entry station and have the toll recalculated.
🌻 Girasole Tip: It is useful to remember the name of the motorway entrance you used – particularly on longer journeys.
If you travel in Italy regularly, an electronic toll device can make motorway journeys considerably easier.
Telepass allows you to use dedicated electronic lanes without collecting a ticket or stopping to make a manual payment. Different plans are available, including subscription-based options and Grab&Go, where the device is purchased and charges are linked more closely to actual use. Current offers and promotions change over time.
For travellers who drive through several European countries, alternatives include Bip&Go Europe, whose compatible badge works on the Italian motorway network as well as France, Spain and Portugal.
Telepass European Device can also be used in Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Croatia.
💡 Does Telepass make the motorway cheaper?
Think of electronic tolling primarily as a convenience service, not automatically as a motorway discount. The main advantage is avoiding payment queues and simplifying toll payment.
However, particular Telepass plans, promotions, vehicle categories or motorway sections may offer discounts or cashback, so check the current conditions when subscribing.
Esistono diverse formule, comprese soluzioni in abbonamento e Grab&Go.
💡 Telepass significa pagare meno?
Italian petrol stations commonly offer two types of service:
👤 SERVITO – an attendant fills the car for you. Convenient, but fuel can be more expensive.
⛽ SELF / FAI DA TE – you fill the car yourself and usually pay a lower price.
Always check the displayed price before choosing the pump.
Which fuel?
🟢 Benzina = Petrol / Gasoline
⚫ Gasolio / Diesel = Diesel
⚠️ With a rental car, always check the fuel type before filling up – it is normally shown on the fuel cap or rental documents.
💳 Paying at automatic stations
Many petrol stations have automatic payment terminals, particularly outside staffed opening hours.
When paying by card, the terminal may temporarily pre-authorise an amount higher than the fuel you actually purchase. The difference is subsequently released by your bank/card provider.
🌻 Girasole Tip: Don't be surprised if you temporarily see a larger blocked amount on your card after using an automatic fuel station. Keep the receipt until the transaction is fully settled.
If you are travelling with a company car and need an invoice, we recommend looking for Conad Carburanti stations. In our experience, obtaining the required receipt/invoice is convenient and their fuel prices are often very competitivecompared with other stations.
🌻 It can therefore be a good option both for business travellers and price-conscious drivers.
In case of an accident or breakdown, first stop in a safe place, switch on the hazard lights and put on a reflective vest before leaving the vehicle. Use the warning triangle where required.
For emergencies call 112, the European emergency number.
If you are driving a rental car, also contact the rental company's roadside assistance and follow their instructions before arranging repairs yourself.
🌻 Girasole Tip: Keep the rental agreement, insurance documents and assistance telephone number easily accessible during your journey.
