Populonia – The Etruscan City of Iron

Just a short drive from Monteverdi lies one of the most fascinating archaeological landscapes in Tuscany. Populonia was one of the great Etruscan cities – and its wealth was closely connected with iron.

In September 2026, archaeologists from the University of Pisa presented new results from excavations at Poggio della Porcareccia, once the main industrial area of the Etruscan city. Research has revealed an almost 200 m² industrial building, together with slag deposits, remains of furnaces and layers marked by intense fire. The latest phase of the complex dates mainly from the second half of the 4th to the early 3rd century BC. cfs.unipi.it

For centuries, iron production helped make Populonia one of the most important centres of northern Etruria. Iron ore, including hematite, was brought across the sea from the mines of Elba, processed around the Gulf of Baratti and transformed into a resource that connected the island, the coast and the wider Mediterranean world. Archaeological research has documented extensive remains of this metallurgical activity around Baratti. etd.adm.unipi.it

Today you can explore this extraordinary history in the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia – where Etruscan tombs, ancient industrial landscapes, the sea and the hills all form part of the same story.

Populonia – La città etrusca del ferro

A poca distanza da Monteverdi si trova uno dei paesaggi archeologici più affascinanti della Toscana. Populonia fu una delle grandi città etrusche – e la sua ricchezza era strettamente legata al ferro.

Nel settembre 2026 gli archeologi dell’Università di Pisa hanno presentato i nuovi risultati degli scavi al Poggio della Porcareccia, un tempo principale area produttiva della città etrusca. Le ricerche hanno riportato alla luce un edificio industriale di quasi 200 m², insieme a scarichi di scorie, resti di forni e livelli segnati da un’intensa attività del fuoco. L’ultima fase del complesso risale soprattutto alla seconda metà del IV e ai primi decenni del III secolo a.C.cfs.unipi.it

Per secoli la lavorazione del ferro contribuì a rendere Populonia uno dei centri più importanti dell’Etruria settentrionale. Il minerale di ferro, tra cui l’ematite, arrivava via mare dalle miniere dell’Isola d’Elba, per essere lavorato nell’area del Golfo di Baratti, creando un legame tra l’isola, la costa e il più ampio mondo mediterraneo. Le ricerche archeologiche hanno documentato vaste testimonianze di questa attività metallurgica intorno a Baratti. etd.adm.unipi.it

October is a wonderful time to explore our corner of Tuscany. The summer crowds are gone, the countryside is changing colour and local towns and villages fill the weekends with food, wine, outdoor activities and traditional autumn events.

🍂 Autumn in Tuscany – flavours, colours & traditions

Autumn brings a different rhythm to Tuscany. The vineyards turn golden and red, the grape harvest gives way to the olive harvest, chestnuts return to village markets and seasonal menus fill with mushrooms, truffles, game and new olive oil.

It is also the season of sagre and local food festivals. Small towns and villages celebrate their wines, traditional recipes and local products – often with street food, tastings, music and markets.

And there is another reason to love Tuscany in autumn: fewer visitors, quieter roads and a slower pace. It is the perfect time to discover hilltop villages, wineries and the countryside around Monteverdi.

🔥 Fire Risk – Burning Ban Extended Until 13 September

Due to the continuing high wildfire risk, the Tuscany Region has extended the ban on burning agricultural and forestry vegetation residues until 13 September 2026.

During this period, burning vegetation residues is prohibited throughout Tuscany and lighting fires in wooded areas is also prohibited.

The restriction was originally due to end on 31 August but has been extended because of the forecast of high temperatures and continued dry weather.

🌻 Girasole Note: Please take extra care in the countryside and wooded areas around Monteverdi Marittimo. In dry conditions, even a small source of fire can become dangerous.

🔥 Rischio Incendi – Divieto Prorogato fino al 13 Settembre

A causa del persistente rischio elevato di incendi boschivi, la Regione Toscana ha prorogato fino al 13 settembre 2026 il divieto di abbruciamento di residui vegetali agricoli e forestali.

Durante questo periodo, l'abbruciamento dei residui vegetali è vietato in tutta la Toscana ed è inoltre vietata l'accensione di fuochi nelle aree boschive.

Il divieto, inizialmente previsto fino al 31 agosto, è stato prorogato a causa delle previsioni di temperature elevate e condizioni meteorologiche asciutte.

🌻 Nota Girasole: Presta particolare attenzione nelle campagne e nelle aree boschive intorno a Monteverdi Marittimo. In condizioni di siccità anche una piccola fonte di fuoco può diventare pericolosa.

🛵 Vespa Tour Arrives in Monteverdi – 20 September / Il Tour in Vespa Arriva a Monteverdi – 20 Settembre

On Sunday, 20 September 2026, Monteverdi Marittimo will welcome participants of the 14th “Gli Etruschi del Mare” Vespa Gathering, organised by Vespa Club Piombino.

The Vespa tour starts from the Golfo di Baratti and arrives in Monteverdi Marittimo, where participants will enjoy a guided visit of the village.

From 12:00, the programme continues with an aperitivo and awards at InFOOD, followed by lunch at the local festival area.

Domenica 20 settembre 2026, Monteverdi Marittimo accoglierà i partecipanti al 14° Raduno “Gli Etruschi del Mare”, organizzato dal Vespa Club Piombino.

Il tour in Vespa partirà dal Golfo di Baratti e arriverà a Monteverdi Marittimo, dove è prevista una visita guidata del paese.

Dalle 12:00 il programma proseguirà con aperitivo e premiazioni presso InFOOD, seguiti dal pranzo nell’area sagre.
