Etruscans · Necropolises · Acropolis · Sea Views
Walk through more than two thousand years of history overlooking the Gulf of Baratti.
Populonia was one of the great cities of the Etruscans and, remarkably, the only major Etruscan city built directly on the coast. Today its archaeological park stretches from the Gulf of Baratti up to the ancient acropolis on the promontory.
The park is divided into two main areas:
🏺 Etruscan Necropolises – explore monumental tombs at San Cerbone and rock-cut chamber tombs at Le Grotte.
🏛️ Acropolis of Populonia – discover Roman temples, buildings, mosaics and ancient roads while enjoying spectacular views over the Gulf of Baratti and the Tuscan Archipelago.
⏱️ Visit: from around 1–1.5 hours for one area to a full day for the complete park
🥾 Experience: archaeology + walking + nature
👨👩👧 Families: guided visits and activities are available
🅿️ Parking: dedicated parking near the Necropolis; separate parking near the Acropolis
📍 Baratti & Populonia – Piombino
🌻 Girasole Tip: If you have enough time, don't choose between the Necropolis and the Acropolis – visit both. They tell two very different parts of Populonia's story, and the landscape overlooking the sea is part of the experience.
After visiting the archaeological park, continue up to the tiny medieval village of Populonia Alta. Walk through its narrow streets, visit the Rocca di Populonia and enjoy beautiful views over the Gulf of Baratti and the Tuscan coast.
🥾 Look for the Path of the Ancient Walls / Necropolis of Populonia – a walking route connecting the historic landscape around Populonia. Route conditions and current access should be checked locally before setting out.
🌻 Girasole Tip: Combine the archaeological park, Populonia Alta and the viewpoint into one trip. It makes Populonia much more than just an archaeological visit.
Rocca & Tower: Entrance to the tower is not free. Tickets can be purchased at the small ticket kiosk in the square in front of the Rocca.
💡 Did You Know? Populonia Is Privately Owned
Populonia is one of Italy's unusual privately owned medieval villages. In the 20th century, Roman lawyer Tommaso Gasparri purchased the estate at a bankruptcy auction. Today, the Gasparri family still owns most of the historic borgo, including the Rocca, tower and private archaeological collection, and has played an important role in preserving and developing the village.
For archaeology enthusiasts: the nearby Poggio del Molino preserves the remains of an ancient Roman coastal settlement. Public access can vary, so check current visiting possibilities before going.
Populonia was much more than an Etruscan city overlooking the sea. It became one of the great metallurgical centres of the ancient Mediterranean. Iron ore, especially hematite brought by sea from the island of Elba, was processed here on an extraordinary scale.
And archaeology is still revealing this story today. Recent excavations in the Porcareccia area have uncovered further evidence of ancient ironworking – including iron slag, fragments of hematite, remains associated with furnaces and soil altered by extremely high temperatures.
🥾 Follow the Via del Ferro – one of the archaeological park's routes leads through the ancient industrial landscape, where you can discover how iron helped make Populonia one of the most important Etruscan cities.
🌻 Girasole Tip: When walking through Baratti today, try to imagine this peaceful bay 2,500 years ago – ships arriving from Elba loaded with iron ore, furnaces burning near the coast and an entire city prospering from metal.

Etruscans · Ancient Velathri · Extraordinary Art · 3000 Years of History
🇬🇧 If you visit only one Etruscan museum during your stay at Residence Girasole, this is the one we recommend.
In the heart of Volterra, the Museo Etrusco Guarnacci houses an extraordinary collection dedicated to the ancient Etruscan city of Velathri – today's Volterra.
Founded in the 18th century, it is one of the oldest public museums in Europe. Today its collections fill three floors of Palazzo Desideri Tangassi and include some of the most famous masterpieces of Etruscan art.
⭐ What You Absolutely Shouldn't Miss
👤 Ombra della Sera – The Shadow of the Evening
The museum's icon. This extraordinarily elongated bronze figure from the 3rd century BC looks almost like a piece of modern sculpture – despite being more than 2,000 years old.
❤️ Urna degli Sposi – Urn of the Spouses
One of the museum's masterpieces, depicting an elderly married couple reclining together.
⚱️ The Etruscan Cinerary Urns
The museum preserves the largest collection of Hellenistic cinerary urns in Etruria, decorated with scenes of mythology, everyday life and the journey to the afterlife.
🏺 Stele di Avile Tite & other treasures
Continue through an extraordinary collection that includes ceramics, bronzes, jewellery and objects discovered around ancient Volterra.
🌻 Our Girasole Recommendation
Don't rush through this museum.
Take time to look at the faces on the Etruscan urns. Suddenly the Etruscans stop feeling like an ancient civilisation from a textbook and start looking like real people who lived, loved and died here more than two thousand years ago.
And after the museum, continue exploring Volterra itself. The Etruscan Acropolis, Roman Theatre, medieval streets and Piazza dei Priori make this an easy full-day trip from Monteverdi. Volterra also offers a 72-hour combined museum card covering Guarnacci and several other major sites.
📍 Via Don Giovanni Minzoni 15, Volterra
Fermatevi a osservare i volti scolpiti sulle urne etrusche.
